Launch the Software
Open UniFab Screen Recorder and select your desired recording mode. Here you can take your pick between the whole screen, a specific area, or a particular window.
Customize Your Recording Settings
Adjust your recording preferences, such as including audio and enabling the camera. Tailor the settings to fit your specific needs.
Start Recording
Initiate the screen capture by hitting the "Start Recording" button.
Xbox Game Bar is built into Windows 10 and 11, making it the quickest way to record your screen without installing anything. Despite its name, it works for any application, not just games.
Step 1: Enable Xbox Game Bar
Go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and toggle it on. You can also enable it by pressing Win + G on your keyboard.
Step 2: Configure audio settings
Open Game Bar with Win + G and click the gear icon. Under Capturing, enable "Record audio when I record a game." Select your microphone from the audio settings if you want voice narration alongside system audio.
Step 3: Start recording
Press Win + Alt + R to start recording immediately, or click the record button in the Game Bar overlay. A small timer appears in the corner of your screen. Press Win + Alt + R again to stop. Recordings are saved to Videos > Captures by default.
OBS Studio is the most powerful free screen recording tool available. It supports unlimited recording time, multiple audio tracks, and advanced scene composition. The learning curve is steeper, but the flexibility is unmatched.
Step 1: Download and run the auto-configuration wizard
Install OBS from obsproject.com. On first launch, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, which optimizes settings based on your hardware. Select "Optimize just for recording" when prompted.
Step 2: Add a screen capture source
In the Sources panel, click + and select Display Capture (full screen) or Window Capture (single app). Name your source and click OK. Your screen should now appear in the OBS preview window.
Step 3: Configure audio inputs
In Settings > Audio, set your Desktop Audio to your speakers/headphones and Mic/Auxiliary Audio to your microphone. OBS records both tracks independently, giving you full control during post-production editing.
Step 4: Record
Click Start Recording in the lower right panel. OBS records silently in the background. Click Stop Recording when finished. Files are saved to the path specified in Settings > Output > Recording Path.
macOS does not natively record system audio — only microphone input. Here are two approaches to get both.
Press Cmd + Shift + 5 to open the Screenshot Toolbar. Click Options and select your microphone under the audio section. This captures your screen with voice narration but does not record system sounds.
For quick recordings without installing desktop software, browser extensions are a practical option.
Free plan limits: 5-minute videos, watermark on exports. Paid plan ($49/year) removes all limits.
Loom is particularly useful for async communication — share recordings with teammates without uploading to a separate platform.
Recordings are saved to the Photos app in MOV format.
Recordings are saved to your Gallery or Files app in MP4 format.
Xbox Game Bar (built into Windows 10) records screen with both system audio and microphone at no cost. Press Win + Alt + R to start recording inside any application. For desktop recording, OBS Studio is a free open-source alternative that handles all capture scenarios.
The most common causes are: muted system volume, wrong audio input selected in recording settings, or privacy permissions blocking microphone access. On Mac, system audio requires a virtual audio driver like BlackHole. Check your recording tool's audio settings and run a short test before your main recording.
macOS does not capture system audio natively. Install BlackHole (free virtual audio driver), create a Multi-Output Device in Audio MIDI Setup, and select it as your audio source in QuickTime or OBS. This routes system audio to your recording tool alongside your microphone.
Use a browser extension like Screencastify or Loom. Both capture tab audio (system sound from the active browser tab) and microphone simultaneously. For recording outside the browser, Loom's desktop app handles full-screen capture with audio on any platform.
OBS Studio remains the best free screen recorder overall — it supports unlimited recording, multiple audio tracks, 4K resolution, and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. For a simpler experience on Windows, Xbox Game Bar handles basic screen recording with audio without any setup.
Open Control Center, long-press the Screen Recording button, toggle on Microphone, and tap Start Recording. This captures both system audio (app sounds, media playback) and your voice through the microphone. Recordings save to the Photos app in MOV format.
Yes. OBS Studio records each audio source on separate tracks within the same file. This lets you adjust system audio and voice levels independently during editing. UniFab also supports dual audio recording with separate volume controls.
Lower your recording resolution from 4K to 1080p, reduce the frame rate from 60fps to 30fps, and close resource-heavy applications during recording. If using OBS, switch the encoder from x264 (CPU) to NVENC (GPU) for smoother performance. Ensure your storage drive has sufficient free space — recording to a nearly full drive causes frame drops.
MP4 (H.264) is the most compatible format for sharing and uploading. MKV is safer during recording because it resists file corruption if the recording stops unexpectedly. Record in MKV, then remux to MP4 (a lossless, instant conversion) in OBS or VLC for distribution.
There is no hard time limit on most tools — OBS Studio and UniFab can record for hours as long as you have sufficient disk space (roughly 2-5 GB per hour at 1080p). Xbox Game Bar has a maximum recording time of 4 hours per session. iPhone screen recording is limited only by available storage.
